I believe that therapy is as individual and unique as the client attending. Therapy can only be meaningful and transformative if it fits into the context of one's own self-identity, values and beliefs.
To this end I offer an integrative approach that draws from the three modalities in which I am qualified: person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural therapies. By utilising discreet aspects of each we work together to identify patterns and how our life experiences and relationships growing up contributed to their development. We consider how useful these patterns are in your present day life and which aspects might be helpful to change and adapt. Using the core beliefs of person-centred therapy of your innate ability to know and meet your own needs we identify goals that will contribute to developing a healthier view of yourself, changing relationship patterns and behaviours, and living an authentic and fulfilling life. This might be done through developing self awareness, setting short and long term goals, and practicing skills.
It is important that you always feel in control of your process and that it is meaningful and beneficial to you. This includes consideration and respect for your culture, religion and self-identity.
An essential element of this will be the relationship you are able to build with your therapist. My therapeutic approach is collaborative and aims to empower you with the self-awareness, knowledge and skills to make the decisions and changes that are important and useful to you.
I also offer in-person and online EMDR sessions.
Offering sessions in-person and online. My pronouns are she/her.
I strive to create a warm and kind environment where I can support you in finding your way and to encourage you to express yourself freely in a safe space.
In our sessions you will have the opportunity to explore what is happening in your life, to understand yourself more clearly, and to find ways of dealing with the issues and difficulties you are facing. The experience of self-exploration often leads to feeling more in control and confident as you begin to discover who you are.
Experiences in our lives can leave us feeling helpless, confused or angry without knowing why. Perhaps you feel lost, frightened or out of control following a change in your life, or maybe you need to explore your childhood memories. At these times you may feel you need some professional help and support.
My background and training have focused primarily on Psychodynamic Counselling, - helping individuals to unravel, experience and understand their deep-rooted feelings to resolve them.
Whatever difficulty you are experiencing, counselling has the potential to offer you a place where you can be understood and heard, safe in the knowledge that your words and feelings will be treated with dignity and respect.
Offering in-person, online and telephonic sessions. My pronouns are she/her.
I believe that therapy is not a case of “one size fits all.” I work intuitively with you as an individual, using a blend of approaches to find a way that works for you.
I offer a safe and confidential space to explore your feelings and any challenges you might be facing, to listen to the emotions you may be experiencing and to support you to make the links between your past and your current way of thinking, behaviour and relationships.
I believe we all have the wisdom inside of us to achieve a happy and fulfilling life, so I aim to empower people to tap into that wisdom to heal and grow within themselves.
I have a passion for supporting people to reach the place they would like to be in their lives. My pronouns are she/her.
Psychodynamic therapy involves the interpretation of mental and emotional processes rather than focusing on behaviour. Psychodynamic therapists attempt to help clients find patterns in their emotions, thoughts, and beliefs in order to gain insight into their current self. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are a client's self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behaviour.
Person-centred therapy is a humanistic approach that deals with the ways in which individuals perceive themselves consciously. Person-centred therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions.
CBT is a way of focusing on the cognitive processes that produce feelings. The approach helps by changing people’s behaviour and attitudes with a deeper understanding of thoughts, images, beliefs, and attitudes. It utilises skills learning, techniques and homework to develop a 'toolbox' of useful and adaptable skills that can assist in developing more supportive and fulfilling coping techniques.
EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Unlike other treatments that focus on directly altering the emotions, thoughts and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy focuses directly on the memory, and is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms.
An integrative counsellor believes there isn’t just one therapeutic approach that can help a client in all situations. Instead, they take into account you as an individual and your circumstances, and use elements of different approaches to help you explore and cope with your problems.
The humanistic approach believes that we all naturally gravitate towards goodness. While difficult life experiences may temporarily block our ability to reach our potential, with support we all have the ability to achieve our goals. Humanistic therapy creates a safe, supportive space where clients will be able to explore themselves and their potential to work towards personal growth.
I-CBT is an effective and useful way of managing and reducing intrusive thoughts and obsessive compulsive behaviours. It builds skills that allow you to notice your compulsive thoughts and behaviours, make sense of the experience and interrupt the compulsive cycle. This approach does require commitment to practice the skills at home between sessions and to review the knowledge gained from sessions.
CBT-I is a useful treatment for insomnia that is not caused by other sleep disorders such as sleepwalking or sleep apnea. During sessions you will be supported by your therapist to notice your own beliefs and thoughts around sleeplessness, to notice how learned behaviour informs insomnia and to build new habits and behaviours. It also involves a time limited sleep reduction programme which helps to 'reset' the body's relationship to sleep. This programme might initially result in increased fatigue, but offers very good outcomes for long term improvement. This approach does require commitment to practice the skills at home and to persevere until good outcomes are reached.
