Couples therapy with a neutral and supportive therapist can offer a space to develop communication skills, have difficult conversations, recognise unhelpful patterns and reconnect with each other as individuals.
We welcome couples of all orientations and dynamics.
Neurodiversity is a meaningful and valuable human variation in our experience of and interaction with the world. Counselling with a therapist that is affirmative and compassionate, with an ethos of normalisation and accommodation can offer a space in which to build better self-care and self-compassion.
The trauma from abuse, bullying or narcissistic relationships can cause long lasting damage to our trust in the world, other people and ourselves. It can affect both our bodies and minds. Working with a qualified counsellor we can make meaning of our experiences, reconnect with ourselves and develop self-compassionate coping skills to help us recover from the effects of trauma.
Depression, fear and anxiety are common and universal experiences in our modern day life. Counselling and therapy can offer a chance to think about patterns of coping, resilience building and developing new techniques that contribute to a more confident and meaningful experience of self.
We might experience intrusive thoughts, fears or phobias that might make it hard for us to participate fully in life or cause us to avoid situations that we might otherwise not want to. Therapy can support us in developing the skills and tools to assist us in challenging and reducing avoidant behaviour and intrusive thoughts.
A counsellor or therapist can be a valuable avenue of support with difficult decisions such as coming out, exploring self-identity or working through experiences of abuse or rejection. All therapists at Well In Mind Therapy are LGBTQ+ supportive and affirming.

Family members and loved ones can also benefit from a counsellor or therapist to help work towards acceptance, understand fears and concerns, and build or repair bonds.
We can often develop a critical inner voice that might result in us feeling as if we are not good enough - especially if we are perfectionists as well. Through working with a qualified therapist we can learn to develop a more self-compassionate way of relating to ourselves and others which builds self-esteem and self-worth.
Changing circumstance - we grow older, kids move out, relationships end or we move home - can stir up very difficult questions and struggles. Sometimes we might need some support to build a new sense of self, or to process what is gone and what is ahead of us. A compassionate and supportive therapist can be a valuable resource in discovering the new you.
There are many types of loss. Bereavement, empty nest, loss of good health, employment and self-identity can result in a dramatic shift of our experience of self and the world. Counselling and therapy can offer a chance to make sense of one's new reality, make meaning of what has happened and find value in a new normal.

Before you and your therapist can agree on areas you might want to explore or goals that you might have for therapy, you will have an initial assessment with them. This assessment is the chance for you and your therapist to discuss the type of therapy that might be best suited to your needs, what you wish to gain from therapy and how this might be accomplished. At this session your therapist will take down some information such as your current concerns and your mental health history. They will also discuss your current and past experiences with you to work with you to identify the areas that you might want to focus on or change. This will not be a therapeutic session as it will primarily focus on information gathering and therapeutic contract setting. Both in-person and online sessions available.
Weekly 50 minute sessions with a qualified and experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor working towards self-exploration and/or specific goals. Long or short term therapy goals and terms of therapy are discussed with your therapist at assessment and you are in control at all times. 50 minute sessions offered at a set day and time each week. Your session time remains yours until an agreed end date. Both in-person and online sessions available. We are able to offer sessions to support both adults and young people.

After contacting us you will be offered a low cost assessment appointment. There is no obligation to continue with therapy after your assessment appointment.
What will happen at the assessment?
The assessment appointment is a chance for you to meet your therapist, discuss your needs and your goals. This is helpful in deciding whether you agree with their approach, whether you are comfortable with them and whether you want to proceed with ongoing appointments.
Your therapist will introduce themselves to you and will also ask about your hopes and goals for therapy, which ‘problems’ you wanted to address and take some background information. This is a good time for your therapist to explain their approach to you and answer any questions you might have.
Your assessment appointment is not a ‘therapy session’ but instead an opportunity for you and your therapist to gain some information, and for you to decide whether you are comfortable with them.
What are my options after the assessment?
You and your therapist will discuss goals and treatment options that work best for you. Some possibilities might be short vs long term therapy, focussing on immediate goals vs exploring your existing patterns and how they were developed, etc. It is important that the therapeutic approach and agreed therapy contract is meaningful to you.
How do therapy sessions work?
Therapy sessions will be a 50-minute slot offered weekly on the same day and time. This will in effect be your slot and will be available to you at all times, except for when your therapist is on a break. You will be advised of all breaks in good time.
Your session is yours to use as you require and your therapist will keep your goals and preferred methodologies in mind. They will frequently check in to make sure that you are still on the same page and make adjustments as is necessary. There are no expectations on you to use your sessions ‘correctly’ and it is normal to feel some discomfort at the start of therapy as you get used to the setting and your therapist. Feel free to discuss this with your therapist.
It is normal for therapy to evoke some strong emotions in you and you do not have to worry about having ‘upset’ your therapist or having ‘said the wrong thing’. It is a safe space where you can speak openly and say what is on your mind without judgment or the fear of failure. There is no ‘right way’ to do therapy. The goal is simply for you to find benefit in exploring your experience or building new skills.
How do I end therapy?
You and your therapist might have agreed on a short-term course of therapy, in which case an end date would already be agreed. If you are however in an open-ended therapy contract or would like to end your short-term sessions early you can simply discuss it with your therapist.
Sometimes therapy can make us uncomfortable, especially as we may at times access deeply hidden emotions, and it can make us want to escape from the discomfort. This can be valuable to discuss with your therapist as this can often lead to important discoveries about our own defence and coping mechanisms, possibly clarifying another pattern in our lives. At times you and your therapist might agree that ending therapy at that point is the best option and you can agree on an end date that allows for a meaningful and mutual ending. The ending is very important in therapy as having a good ending that allows for a chance to say goodbye and to think about the work that has been done can help both you and your therapist.
You will never be denied an ending and the therapist will always follow your lead. If you however do end your sessions and in future wish to restart your therapy we cannot guarantee that your previous session slot will still be available.
